Delta throwback: Safeway comes to town

The new store was big news in Tsawwassen back in 1970

The new Safeway store would be one of three located in Delta.

Let’s do a throwback and check out this 1970 photo of the new Safeway store in the Town Centre Shopping Centre in Tsawwassen.

Eight years ago, new parent company Sobeys sold the Tsawwassen Safeway to the Overwaitea Food Group following a Competition Bureau ruling regarding Sobeys' previous acquisition of Canada Safeway.

And three years ago, Sobeys announced the locations of its first FreshCo locations in B.C., including the conversion of the Safeway store in Ladner.

That store reopened in December of 2019 under the new brand.

Sobeys, which is owned by Empire Company Ltd., owns or franchises several grocery chains, including Thrifty Foods, IGA, Price Chopper, FreshCo and Foodland.

Delta’s last remaining Safeway is the store at 64th Avenue at Scott Road in North Delta.

Empire isn’t saying if it will also eventually convert.
