Let’s head back to June 17, 1966, when the new Tsawwassen Golf and Country Club and the foot of Imperial Hill officially opened.
BC Minister of Industrial Development and Trade and Commerce, Ralph Loffmark, opened the new amenity, introduced by Delta Reeve Clarence Taylor.
The afternoon event featured two amateurs and two professional golfers playing a demonstration round at the new course.
“This is a beautiful layout,” remarked enthused golf pro Alfred Tate. “A man can play a round in the morning and get back home to spend most of a holiday with his family, or he can play a round in the evening or supper. The greens are in excellent condition, second to none, and members will have the best place in the world to play.”
The course included a fully enclosed 20-tee driving range, a well-filled pro shop and a new clubhouse would be built in three months.
The half-million-dollar golf and country club was owned by E.W Gibbs of Vancouver.
Loffmark congratulated Gibbs on his choice of location, remarking on Delta having so much land still free to be used for recreational purposes.
In 2008, municipal council gave approval for a major redevelopment, which included housing, for current owner Ron Toigo for the site now called Tsawwassen Springs.
