Delta council gave preliminary approval recently to legislation that will better regulate soil removal and deposit activities.
"This is a great bylaw," said Coun. Ian Paton, who is a local farmer. "It's certainly tightened up the rules in Delta."
Paton said Delta is ahead of many other municipalities in the region in enacting such legislation, adding once it's approved it should curb problems that have been experienced.
The municipality has had concerns over the years about fill being dumped on farmland. Some farmers have been solicited by companies wanting to bring in fill, some of which contains materials like asphalt and concrete, which can have negative impacts on the property and surrounding land.
