More improvements are planned for 84th Avenue.

Last year, the engineering department completed roadway improvements between 112th Street and 116th streets in North Delta, which included on-street cycle lanes.

Now being designed, the next phase of improvements along 84th Avenue will occur from 108th to 112th streets.

A memo to council from the engineering department says the plan will provide fully protected cycling facilities behind curbs rather than on the street.

With a physical separation between cyclists and moving vehicles, cycling will be safer and comfortable for all ages and abilities, including families with children, seniors and new riders, the department explains, adding a network of fully protected cycling routes will help make cycling a more convenient alternative for short trips.

The section of 84th Avenue connects to the Nordel Social Heart, Nordel Way and River Road.

“Providing a fully protected cycling facility for this project also improves the chances of receiving TransLink and Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure cost share funding for construction. The improvements along 84 Avenue will also include curb bulges at intersections and pedestrian crossings to increase green space,” the department notes.

Funding for the design has been included in the city’s revised capital program.

Public consultation is scheduled to take place in fall/winter of 2020 with construction tentatively scheduled for 2025.
