DPD investigating suspected arson at North Delta playground

Early morning fire at Chalmers Elementary School

Delta police and the Delta fire department are investigating a suspected arson following an early morning fire at the playground at Chalmers Elementary in North Delta.

Both police and firefighters responded to the fire around 4 a.m. Wednesday morning.

“On arrival police observed the playground, which has a mulch base, fully engulfed,” said a news release from Delta police. “The complainant reported seeing a male running westbound on 73 Avenue from the area. It is unknown if he is related to the incident but is described as a Caucasian male, six-feet tall, medium build, wearing a black ball cap and grey/brown track jacket and jeans.”

Police did attempt to deploy K-9 at the time however the area was contaminated due to the number of residents out in the area at the time of the fire.

The damage to the playground is estimated to be a minimum of $5,000.
