DSS alumni share lessons learned

Home for the Holidays program sees post-secondary students return to provide advice to Grade 12s

The annual return home of post-secondary students during the holiday season has seen many Delta Secondary alumni pass on what they have learned to current Grade 12 students.

For the second year in a row, recent graduates from DSS were invited back during the last week before winter break to speak with the graduating class about what post-secondary life is like.

"What they do when they come back is they give advice," said Yvette Livingston, career advisor at Delta Secondary. "We ask them, 'If you were in Grade 12 again, what would you want to know?'"

The initiative is called Home for the Holidays and the goal is to pass on practical knowledge to students who will soon be experiencing life after high school.

The returning alumni give advice on everything from classes to residence to sports and extra-curricular endeavours.

This year's event consisted of alumni from a wide array of post-secondary institutions, including the University of Victoria, SFU, Queens University, Capilano University, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Vancouver Community College and BCIT. Returning graduates are studying a vast range of subjects from fine arts to business to aerospace.

It is a popular event because Grade 12 students enjoy getting the advice, and alumni like coming back to give it, explained Livingston. The alumni also just like to come back to visit with their teachers and former peers.

"Overall, it is a feel good event," said Livingston.
