Erratic driving likely due to cell phone use

The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week:

Tsawwassen

Oct. 1, 12:58 a.m., 5300-block of 12th Avenue: Complainant requested assistance with the eviction of his tenants. Complainant referred to Residential Tenancy Branch as the matter was a civil issue between the parties.

Oct. 2, 10:40 a.m., 1300-block of Morris Crescent: Complainant's purse was stolen from a friend's vehicle after the thief smashed the window to gain access. Cell phone, ID and bank cards were stolen. The credit cards were used numerous times immediately following the theft due to the "tap" payment features on the cards. Incident still under investigation.

Oct. 2, 9:28 p.m., Highway 17: Complainant reported a vehicle being driven erratically. Police located the vehicle and found the driver sober but that he had most likely been on a cell phone. Driver was given a verbal warning and sent on his way as police were unable to substantiate the phone use.

Oct. 3, 12:25 a.m., 5000-block of Cedar Springs Drive: Suspect smashed rear driver's side window of a locked vehicle and stole the complainant's purse off the seat. A check of credit cards revealed they had been used at several locations. Incident still under investigation.

Oct. 5, 6:30 p.m., 1100-block of 56th Street: Complainant's unlocked BMX bike stolen from outside store while he was inside shopping. No suspects or witnesses.

Ladner

Sept. 29, 9:30 a.m., 4800-block of Delta Street: While shopping in a store, the complainant put her purse down. She later found her purse in another part of the store with several of her identification and transit cards missing. No suspects.

Sept. 29, 3:50 p.m., 47A Avenue/48B Street: Complainant reported that he had seen a female he believed was smoking marijuana while driving a vehicle. Police attended the registered owner's residence and spoke to her. She admitted to driving the vehicle and denied any drug use. No indicia of impairment noted by police officer.

Oct. 1, 10:30 a.m., 7100-block of Vantage Way: Complainant reported that a company vehicle had the gas tank filler neck cut and a quantity of gas was siphoned from the vehicle. Police seized several items for forensic exam. Incident still under investigation.

Oct. 2, 4:39 p.m., 5000-block of 55B Street: Complainant reported a vehicle with three occupants believed were smoking marijuana. The vehicle was located by police, unoccupied and parked legally. Driver unable to be located.

Oct. 2, 4:55 p.m., 4700-block of 47th Avenue: Complainant contacted police to report her "Skype" Internet service had been breached and her computer remotely hacked. Complainant was able to cancel her accounts and obtain assistance with computer files. No further breaches to the complainant's personal information occurred and crime prevention strategies and assistance were provided.

Oct. 3, 1:30 p.m., 72nd Street and 36th Avenue: Complainant's vehicle broken into while it was parked in the area. The driver's side window was smashed and a bag with miscellaneous items and a Care Card was stolen. No witnesses.

Oct. 3, 10:45 a.m., 4700-block of 53rd Street: Complainant reported that the lights on her garage were smashed by an unknown person sometime over the past week. No suspects. Complainant reported the incident via DPD's online crime reporting system.

Oct. 5, 2:54 p.m., 3000-block of 64th Street: Complainant's vehicle broken into while it was parked in the area over a three-hour period. Suspect gained entry by smashing side window. Sunglasses case stolen.
