Another area of North Delta will be getting sidewalk improvements.

The city has issued a request for proposals for design and construction inspection services for sidewalk improvements to infill missing sidewalks in a neighbourhood south of 80th Avenue, bounded by 110th Street, 110A Street, 78th Avenue and 79A Avenue.

The 1.5-metre concrete wide sidewalk is to be installed on one side of the road sidewalk next to the existing curbs and tie into existing sidewalks. The project also includes ornamental LED streetlights.

The design is scheduled to be completed this year and construction in 2024, subject to council’s budget approval in early 2024.

A city engineering report last year noted that 110th Street, south of 80th Avenue, is located near Gray Elementary and serves as an important artery leading into the adjoining neighbourhood.

Construction of sidewalks is to also improve safety and enhance connections to the elementary school as well as the Sungod Recreation Centre.

The current estimated cost for the project is just under $1.1 million.

Meanwhile, Delta council earlier this year gave approval to proceed with the Minster Drive sidewalk project in North Delta. That project will take place from Finlay Drive to Barrymore Drive, and on Finlay Drive from Warwick Road to Minster Drive East.

According to the city, a number of older neighbourhoods were developed without proper sidewalks, curbs and gutters.

Sidewalks have typically been delivered over the years through new developments and capital projects within the Neighbourhood Road Improvements program.

However, with increased requests for infilling of missing sidewalks, council approved additional funding for the city’s annual capital plan for additional sidewalks through the Neighbourhood Livability and Safety Improvements Plan.
