With heavy rains in the forecast, Delta’s extreme weather shelter has been activated.

The shelter will open tonight (Wednesday) and be in operation from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. at the

Ladner United Church (4960 48 Ave.). The shelter will continue to open every night until the extreme weather alert has been lifted by officials.

Now in its fourth season at Ladner United Church, the shelter can accommodate up to five people and opens when the temperature drops below zero or in severe windy and rainy weather conditions.

The shelter offers a warm place to sleep, hot food and drink a hot shower and a chance to dry out from the cold, wet weather.

The shelter is operated in cooperation with volunteers from the United Church, the City of Delta and Options Community Services.

As has been the case since the COVID-19 pandemic started in March, all appropriate health and safety protocols will be in place.

The shelter at the church has also been operating as an emergency response shelter throughout the pandemic.
