Fatal accident closes stretch of 62B Street

Man can't be resuscitated after vehicle found in ditch

One man died early Friday morning after the car he was driving went off the road near River Road and Highway 99 in Ladner.

Delta police spokesperson A/Sgt. Sarah Swallow said officers were dispatched to 62B Street, which turns into River Road heading east into Tilbury, and 60th Avenue at around 6 a.m. after police received several 911 calls about a car in the ditch.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a male driver, the lone occupant of the vehicle, unresponsive. Swallow said the officers and paramedics attempted to resuscitate the man but he was declared dead at the scene.

Traffic had to be diverted around the crash scene for several hours as a stretch of the road was completely closed while officers investigated what caused the vehicle to go off the road.

Swallow said there were no witnesses to the crash, so investigators are looking at all possible causes, including whether the cold weather could have played a factor.

"That area always gets quite icy," she said.

The identity of the victim is not being released at this time.
