Fire truck collides with semi

Four firefighters injured in crash on way to blaze

Four Delta firefighters were hurt earlier this week when a fire truck responding to a residential fire collided with a semi truck.

The collision occurred around 1 p.m. Wednesday in the 7300-block of River Road. Fire Chief Dan Copeland said the truck was responding to a twoalarm fire at a townhouse in Ladner.

The four firefighters were taken to hospital for treatment and later released. The truck driver was treated at the scene but did not require hospitalization.

As a result of the collision, a large amount of diesel fuel was spilled on the road, forcing River Road to be closed for several hours as the clean up took place.

Delta police are investigating the incident.

The fire the crew was responding to was contained to one unit of a townhouse complex in the 4700-block of 55B Street.

Copeland said the call came in at about 12: 45 p.m. and there were flames visible from the third floor of the unit.

Firefighters worked quickly to contain and extinguish the blaze, he said.

"They did an excellent job ... in minimizing the damages to the [neighbouring] suites," Copeland said.

One person was treated at the scene and then transported to hospital.

Delta Emergency Social Services was brought in to offer assistance to those displaced by the fire.

Copeland said both the Delta fire and police departments are investigating the blaze. The cause it not yet known.
