Flooding avoided after winds change direction

After several warnings over the weekend, South Delta escaped flooding Monday morning.

After several warnings over the weekend, South Delta escaped flooding Monday morning.

With some stormy weather in the forecast, the Corporation issued an alert on Saturday as a forecast of strong winds and a storm surge coupled with a high tide prompted concerns of flooding in several Tsawwassen neighbourhoods and Westham Island.

Delta's emergency operations centre was set up and engineering crews were out conducting inspections of our dikes and the waterfront areas at risk, as well beach walkways were lock-blocked and sand-bagged.

However, due to a change in wind direction and a reduced storm surge, most of the area escaped any flooding. A few areas along Ladner Harbour experienced minor flooding, but municipal staff quickly addressed that.
