George Massey Tunnel open house Saturday in Tsawwassen

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is holding an open house on Saturday, March 16 in South Delta to gather more feedback on the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project.

The meeting, which follows two others scheduled for earlier in the week in Richmond and Surrey, is part of a second phase of consultation, following the premier's announcement last September that the government would begin exploring options to replace the 53-year-old underwater crossing.

The first phase, which included a public open house in South Delta, took place last fall.

The phase was to assess the various needs, while the second phase is to gather input on potential bridge and tunnel options.

The province notes the tunnel, having over 80,000 vehicles travel through it daily, is over capacity throughout the morning and evening rush hours. It's close to capacity throughout the day, leading to congested conditions for almost 13 hours a day.

The existing tunnel has 10 to 15 years of useful life remaining before major components will need to be completely replaced. Additionally, while the tunnel remains safe

for all users, it does not meet modern seismic standards, according to the province.

Some of the feedback gathered at the open house in South Delta last fall included residents suggesting the current tunnel not be scrapped completely, but used in addition to whatever new crossing is built.

Whatever the form and location of the new structure, the crossing will likely be tolled.

The upcoming public open house will take place at Coast Tsawwassen Inn (1665-56th St.) from 10 a.m. to 1 pm.
