Mary Ann Scarr's Grade 1/2 class at English Bluff Elementary has been devoted to helping raise funds to donate to B.C. Guide Dog Services.

It all began when Scarr brought in an Optimist article that featured the birth of guide dog puppies. The students were keen to help train these dogs, so their fundraising efforts began.

The class had two cupcake sales and a Toonie Tuesday, and with the support of all the students in the Tsawwassen school, they raised $859.60.

During this project, the young students learned about this important service, had several school visits by service dogs and wrote pen-pal letters to a young visually impaired woman in Ontario whose life has been dramatically improved by the use of her trained dog.

Scarr also brought her dog Buddy into class several afternoons to give the children the full experience of working with dogs.
