A hazardous waste removal crew had to be called out to a Ladner neighbourhood last week after someone illegally dumped materials containing asbestos. Close to 50 garbage bags full of material were left on the street in the 5300-block of Admiral Way last Thursday morning. A resident said she saw the bags, which were all sealed with duct tape and left on the street, early that morning.

Later, the bags were moved to the side of the road and the municipality called in a hazardous waste removal company to safely take the material away.

Municipal engineering director Steven Lan said the incident has been referred to Delta's bylaw department, which is now working to find the culprit.

Those caught illegally dumping waste in Delta face a $500 fine and are charged for the cost of cleanup.
