Helping seniors stay healthy

McKee Seniors' Centre hosting upcoming wellness fair

The McKee Seniors' Recreation Centre will host a wellness fair next Saturday.

The special event will feature demonstrations, wellness presenters, information kiosks and more.

It's also a good chance to showcase the facility, says Gail McEwan, senior centre coordinator with Delta Parks, Recreation and Culture.

"I think it's a good idea for anyone to come and check it out, seniors especially," she says, adding the community is invited to come by. "It's for members but it's really open to everybody."

There will be hosts on site to offer tours of the facility as well.

Examples of presentations include travel planning, nutrition, housing solutions and home care.

"Many of the speakers and presenters are B.C. or Canadian institutions but have a local flavour, so they're specific to this community," says McEwan.

"This wellness fair provides an opportunity for everybody, whether it's something proactive or something that they're dealing with currently. There's lots of neat speakers," she says.

It's common knowledge now that seniors are living longer, says Don MacAllister, chair of McKee House Seniors Society.

"They're more active than ever before," he says, adding he expects a good turnout at the event.

The centre has 1,200 members. The minimum age to join is 50 while the oldest member is 103, says MacAllister.

The wellness fair takes place Saturday, Sept. 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at McKee Seniors' Recreation Centre, 5155-47th Ave., Ladner. The Kee Café will be open.
