Here are the worst spots for traffic tickets in the Tri-Cities

Coquitlam RCMP’s Traffic Enforcement Team handed out nearly 400 tickets for traffic violations in January. You'll be surprised where and what they'll be checking next.

Coquitlam RCMP catch a speeder travelling at 135 km/h in a 70 km/h zone along Lougheed Highway.

Port Moody may have more fines, but speeding may just be worse in Port Coquitlam and Coquitlam.

That's one conclusion to draw after a month-long traffic violation enforcement blitz in the Tri-Cities.

Coquitlam RCMP's Traffic Enforcement Team has released the numbers from its crackdown on speeders, distracted drivers and impaired drivers in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody.

It turns out Barnet Highway was the worst for traffic violations with 156 handed out from a total of 392 for the month.

Other problem zones were (in descending order):

  • Mary Hill Bypass @ 126 tickets/contacts
  • Como Lake Avenue @ 60 tickets/contacts
  • Lougheed Highway @ 50 tickets/contacts

Meanwhile, some of the worst speeders appeared to be in Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam.

Last month Coquitlam RCMP's Traffic Enforcement Team pulled over at least two drivers for excessive speeding in those cities, according to a press release.

One driver was caught travelling at 135 km/h near Orchid Drive on Lougheed Highway, a 70 km/h zone, while the other was nabbed on the Mary Hill bypass for driving 127 km/h in a 60 km/h zone.

Both drivers face $368 to $483 in fines and three points on their driving record.

For the rest of February and all through March, Mounties will continue to target routes where statistics show there are typically a high number of collisions with significant damage, injuries and fatalities.

Judging by the enforcement calendar for the rest of February and March, officers involved in the HAZE (High Accident Zone Enforcement) and HVE (High Visibility Enforcement) will be expanding their coverage and the types of infractions.

Seat belt checks, speeding in school zones

In addition to speeders, police will also be checking for seat belts, child restraints, speeding in playground and school zones, impaired driving and failing to obey traffic control devices.
