Heritage preservation work in Delta recognized

Delta presents awards for restoration of two Ladner buildings and to committee preserving fishing heritage

The Corporation of Delta once again used Heritage Week to honour locals who are preserving the past.

"Heritage Week is a reminder to us all to take a moment to remember and honour the history of our province and of our own communities here in Delta," Mayor Lois Jackson said at Monday night's Delta council meeting.

"We are fortunate to have such substantial and interesting heritage, which is still tangible to us in properties and areas such as those being awarded the Heritage Award of Merit and Friends of Heritage awards.

"This year's theme of maritime heritage is especially prominent in Delta where, to this day, our culture thrives in the waters surrounding our community."

A Heritage Award of Merit was awarded to Steve Knoblauch of Ram Construction for the restoration of the former Ladner Baptist Church building on 47A Avenue.

Linda Park and Pierre Bonato also received a Heritage Award of Merit for the restoration of the Delta Street building that was originally home to McCrea's Pool Hall. It currently houses Open Space Yoga.

The Heritage Award of Merit honours the efforts and dedication of the current owners to preserve iconic and long-standing buildings.

The Delta Heritage Fishing Committee was honoured with the Friends of Heritage Award for its work to promote and preserve the local fishing heritage.

On hand to receive the award were committee members Doug Massey, John Stevens, Peter Capadouca, John D. Capadouca, Michael Wolzen and Brian Birch. Member Joan Blair was unable to attend the ceremony but will receive a certificate as well.

Heritage Week runs from Feb. 17 to 23. The Delta Heritage Advisory Commission, Delta Museum and public libraries have organized local events. Cammidge House in Boundary Bay Regional Park is hosting an open house this Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. to showcase Delta's maritime history.

On Monday night, Jackson also announced Delta's Heritage Banner Design Contest. The contest officially begins May 1. Visit www.delta.ca/heritage for more information.
