Former South Delta Sun Devils volleyball standout Christine Howlett has been recognized for her excellence in the classroom as she prepares for her upcoming sophomore year at Simon Fraser University.

Howlett is among 16 SFU students to earn the Great Northwest Athletic Conference's Faculty Athletic

Representative Scholar-Athlete Award for maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.85 or higher. She was among seven to achieve a GPA of 4.00 or better.

Faculty athletic representative (FAR) awards are presented annually to the most outstanding scholarathletes at each of the GNAC's insitutions.

Howlett helped the Sun Devils win provincial senior AAAA titles in 2012 and 2013 before heading to the Burnaby Mountain campus. She was also a member of the South Delta's B.C. Junior Girls championship team in her Grade 10 year.

The 5-foot-11 outside hitter is expected to have an expanded role this coming season at the NCAA Division 2 level.

SFU will open its season Sept. 17 when it hosts the PACWEST/GNAC Crossover Tournament, with matches slated against Seattle Pacific, Trinity Western and Saint Martin's.
