The biggest crowd yet showed up at the Delta-Surrey border Friday night to celebrate the Vancouver Canucks stunning playoff series win over the 2019 Stanley Cup champs St. Louis Blues.
Tying up traffic for many blocks, a celebration is taking place tonight at the intersection of Scott Road and 72nd Avenue, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, with many cheering fans clogging up the area.
It's reminiscent of the thrilling 2011 Canucks Stanley Cup run.
Although many are cheerfully driving through, honking their horns and waving Canucks flags, a big number, with not a whole lot wearing masks, are marching around or standing in celebration in close quarters.
The excitement is palatable, no doubt due to the long, frustrating dry stretch of team futility fans had to endure.
Delta Police and Surrey RCMP issued a reminder today for fans to celebrate safely.
Both departments said they would be in attendance ensuring public safety and managing traffic.
Although the departments said they would be taking a measured approach, officers would be on hand enforcing the Criminal Code and other provincial statutes including the liquor act.
Officers were also supposed to be mindful of current COVID-19 public health orders and would be monitoring the gathering for compliance. It does not appear officers, though, are handing out fines to celebrating fans at the gathering.
Cris Leykauf, spokesperson for Delta Police, earlier said they’re seeing growing crowds at the intersection and encouraged fans to instead celebrate in small gatherings or in their own homes.
