We all should be concerned about the lack of information about the replacement of the George Massey Tunnel.
I attended the information meetings in late 2012 and early 2013, completed the questionnaires and had my name added to the project’s mailing list. This was followed by the rather sudden announcement by Premier Christy Clark in September of 2013 that we would get a bridge. That was the end of it.
I never received an update or further information as was promised. The only information added to the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project website is two reports in April 2014 stating six project goals and evaluation of 28 individual criteria for seven evaluation areas and numerous designs drawings labelled “drafts for discussion only.” These reports show all options, not only the bridge, suggesting things were far from final.
What has happened since April 2014? These reports list the various options for a new crossing and where. When was it finally decided that it would be a bridge over the alignment of the present tunnel? As stated, I understood we would be kept informed, and receive emails referring to news items on the website, about major decisions, including the one of a 10-lane bridge.
It’s all clear now: even the address list disappeared together with all the records of the meetings and decisions made. I am wondering if Transportation Minister Todd Stone is able to find the George Massey Tunnel in the event he wants to visit it.
