It’s Science Literacy Week at Delta libraries

Enjoy some Science Literacy activities at the Ladner Pioneer Library
FVRL in Tsawwassen
It's Science Week at your Delta libraries.

Take part in science-inspired activities like the paper airplane build challenge on Tuesday, Sept. 19, from 3:15 to 4 p.m. and the marble run build challenge on Thursday, Sept. 21, from 3:15 to 4 p.m. All ages are welcome, but children under 10 must be with a parent/caregiver/guardian. Materials will be provided. Registration is not required. Playing with blocks allows children to learn math and science components, such as problem-solving.

Friday, Sept. 22, from 2 to 3 p.m. is building challenges. Equipment will be provided, but participants are asked to bring your imagination! Test your engineering skills while you build amazing structures with Lego, Keva Planks and Magformers. Registration is required.

Have you ever considered a career as a snake charmer?

On Thursday, Sept. 21, from 3:30 to 4 p.m. at the Tsawwassen Library, learn about energy: static electricity by making a serpent jump up and down and dance. Just like magic, use the invisible forces of static electricity. All you need is tissue paper and a balloon. Supplies provided.

Children and their caregivers are invited to join staff at the George Mackie Library in North Delta for science storytime on Friday, Sept. 22, from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Kids will learn all about math skills - the fun way - through stories, rhymes, songs, and puppets. Afterwards, stay for The Secret of Bees from 11 a.m. to noon and learn all about the differences between wasps and bees.

On Saturday, Sept. 23, from 2 to 3 p.m., drop in and explore FVRL’s Playground collection - Ukulele, bird watching and Nature Backpacks, Puzzle Cube, Radon and Thermal Leak Detectors and more - at our Playground open house.

Are you looking for additional fun and engaging STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) related learning experiences? Register for the monthly STEAM Starters and STEAM Activities at the Ladner Pioneer Library.

In October, kids between the ages of six and nine can participate in Halloween Science and Slime & Static in STEAM Starters and kids ages 10 to 13 discover Vortex Canon and Halloween Science in STEAM Activities.
