Jesus born during time of darkness and political turmoil

I reminded someone yesterday that Jesus was born amidst a noisy backdrop, with animals braying and cooing, in a season of darkness, and in a time of political turmoil. It wasn't easy or soothing as some of our Christmas carols suggest.

I reminded someone yesterday that Jesus was born amidst a noisy backdrop, with animals braying and cooing, in a season of darkness, and in a time of political turmoil. It wasn't easy or soothing as some of our Christmas carols suggest. Jesus and his family departed to a foreign country not long after his birth for they were afraid of King Herod's wrath. They fled to Egypt before settling in Nazareth where Jesus would grow into maturity.

A "noisy" world, a "dark" time and "political unrest" in the world - yes, not much has changed in the last 2000 years. Jesus did not promise to make the Christian path an easy one to follow, but promised that whatever path we trod in this life, God would be with us. I believe that God celebrates when we make a choice that is life-giving, and also weeps when we become destructive, or are destroyed ourselves through no fault of our own.

At this joyous time of year as we reflect on the past and look forward with hope for the New Year, I need to remember that there are many who cannot see a blessed future. So, will you join with me in praying fervently for those who suffer from addiction and mental illness - and a special word for family and medical folk who reach out a helping hand to bring some sense of relief for those suffering right now.

Here's a prayer that we continue to work together, pray together and bring new life together - serving God and building God's kingdom right here in South Delta. Happy New Year everyone - from all the Pastors and Priests in South Delta!
