Delta Fire was able to limit damage to a residential property at 4764 64th Street in East Ladner following an early Saturday morning fire. The home is located next door to the Otter Co-op gas station.

Some quick actions by a retired Delta Fire Battalion Chief on his Saturday morning coffee run prevented what could have been a much worse outcome.

Brent Thomas was at the Tim Horton’s in East Ladner when he noticed a fire at the residence next door on the eastside of 64th Street on May 21.

“He was able to run right over and make sure everything was clear. He shut all the windows upstairs and buttoned everything up. He probably saved the whole house from burning down with his quick actions,” said Delta Fire Deputy Chief Tim Ipsen.

The fire was contained within a suite in the home. The tenant escaped the blaze on her own but did suffer some minor burns and was taken to hospital for treatment, said Ipsen.

“We received multiple calls on the structure fire and once we realized it was close to the (Otter Co-op) gas station we increased it to a second alarm,” continued Ipsen. “It was venting out on the gas station side so we upped the manpower. The crews hit it hard from the outside and they were able to knock the majority of it down and then made entry. The fire gutted the suite but there was no extension anywhere else.”
