Twelve-year-old Ladner resident Morgan Levins has been diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma, a rare type of bone cancer.
The diagnosis was made after a lump was found on Morgan’s collarbone that continued to grow in size.
Morgan was taken to B.C. Children’s Hospital for treatment and is currently on her second round of chemotherapy. The full treatment is expected to last nine months to a year.
Family friend Kirsty Jansen says the ordeal has been tough on the family.
“You don’t think that this is something that is going to happen to you,” she says. “It’s been really difficult, it’s been very emotional, and I think the family is holding up very well.”
A GoFundMe page has been created to help Morgan’s parents, Kerry and Carsen Levins, pay for expenses, including gas, parking at the hospital and care for their son, Max, who’s a toddler.
The Landing Pub will also be hosting a fundraiser on Saturday, June 4 that will include a silent auction, 50/50 draw, meat draw and toonie toss. The Landing will be donating a percentage of the night’s bills to the family.
Jansen encourages everyone to attend the fundraiser, and says the money raised is going to a very appreciative family.
“They are the nicest family. Morgan is such a sweet kid, does well in school, just really kind-hearted, same with Kerry and Carsen,” she says. “They don’t want handouts, they don’t want to be the centre of attention. I know this is really hard for them as well.”
