Queen Elizabeth II passed away on Sept. 8 at 96.

The City of Delta is teaming up with the Ladner Legion for a special memorial service on Monday to honour the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

The ceremony will begin at 10:45 a.m. at the Memorial Park cenotaph in Ladner. It will feature singing and musical performances, including a bugler and members of the Delta Police Pipe Band. There will also be speeches by dignitaries and the laying of wreaths and flowers. The public is welcome to attend.

According to Ladner Legion president Al Ridgway, the idea of doing something began days after Queen Elizabeth II died on Sept. 8, ending her remarkable 70-plus year reign at the age of 96.

“We have a lot of (British) xpats living here that are still beholden to the queen. Our members wanted to do something and so did our executive. We thought they best way would be to reach out to the mayor, Delta Fire, and Delta Police to see if they wanted to get involved too,” explained Ridgway. “We are going to have a real celebration for her and it will be very similar to what you would see at our Remembrance Day ceremony.

“There will be the March on the Colours, we will say a few things and there will be the act of remembrance. We’re actually expecting a lot more people than we originally anticipated.”

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Sept. 19 will be a national day of mourning. The funeral for Queen Elizabeth II is scheduled to start at 3 a.m. (PDT) that day at Westminster Abbey in London.
