Ladner throwback: visiting Delta Bakery

Home baked bread cost just .99 cents for five loaves at the 1965 open house

Let’s take a step back to the January 1965 pages of the Optimist to check out an open house of a longtime business in Ladner Village that’s still around today.

Delta Bakery, located at the Ladner Plaza opposite the Shop-Easy, had a customer appreciation event, demonstrating a recently purchased big gas-fired oven capable of producing 260 delicious loaves of bread every hour.

“This new oven, along with all other modern equipment, makes Delta Bakery one of the most up-to-date bakeries in Delta,” an advertisement said.

The bakery was started by Joe Meyer in the late 1950s and it was sold in the 1970s.

“Delta Bakery is a one-family project with father and son doing the baking, and daughter Anne serving at the counter. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Meyer have a growing family of children attending school and church, and joining in the many youth interests in the community,” an accompanying 1965 article stated.
