Ladner wildfire forces dike closure

Blaze contained but crews still dousing hot spots

As Delta firefighters continued to work to fully extinguish the wildfire in East Ladner yesterday morning, investigators were sent in to determine what started the blaze.

Fire crews were called to the dike area south of 64th Street at around 1 a.m. Monday after receiving reports of a large wildfire.

Delta fire chief Dan Copeland said the fire was being swept up by strong winds and had spread to about two hectares in size.

While the fire was contained, crews, including a helicopter dropping water on the flames, worked into the afternoon to extinguish the blaze.

"Crews did an excellent job to contain this fire and keep it from jumping over the dike," Copeland said.

While the fire was mostly out by Tuesday morning, deputy chief Paul Scholfield said a crew of four firefighters remained on scene dousing hot spots as they flared up.

"We do hope to have it out by this afternoon," he said Tuesday.

The dike remained closed between 72nd and 64th streets.

Scholfield said that while the cause of the fire has yet to be determined, it does not appear it was deliberately set.
