Ladner's Ryan Cooper came away from last month's provincial Yo-Yo Championships with a pair of first-place finishes.

He won gold medals in the 13 and under junior open division and the sport ladder division. He explained sport ladder is where competitors complete an issued list of tricks while the open division is where competitors make up their own tricks and routine.

"It was really fun, just more hanging out with everyone and having fun than competing," said the 12-year-old.

He noted most of the members from the group he's a part of, the Vancouver Yo-Yo Club, were at the event, held at Taylor Park School in Burnaby.

Cooper, who's been yoyoing for about a year, had been practicing an hour or two daily for about a month in preparation for the provincials.

Asked what he enjoys about yo-yoing, Cooper explained while competing is done individually, there's a community aspect to it.

"You compete by yourself but when you're not competing, you're around everyone, with everyone."

Next up for Cooper is the Western Canadians set for June in Kelowna.

He took part in the nationals last year and a Pacific Northwest event in Seattle last February.
