The Ladner Leisure Centre was evacuated Feb. 18 after a large portion of the facade came away from the east wall.

A large portion of the Ladner Leisure Centre will remain closed until further notice as the wall damaged Thursday morning undergoes assessment and repairs.

At about 10:30 a.m. Thursday, a significant part of the building’s stucco façade came away from the wall on the east side of the structure, said chief administrative officer George Harvie. Staff and patrons were evacuated.

Harvie said it appears that stresses over the years had caused the fasteners holding the façade

The debris fell straight down and not into the parking lot at the back of the leisure centre. No one was injured in the incident.

The cycle-fit studio, ice arena and rear parking lot remain closed until further notice, the municipality said in a statement Friday afternoon. The customer service area and all pools remain open to the public, and the fitness area was re-opened Tuesday afternoon.

Delta staff is working with sport user groups affected by the temporary ice arena closure to make alternate arrangements and a meeting is planned for early next week to groups on the process and estimated timeline for repairs and re-opening.

An engineering firm has been retained and will be conducting a building envelope assessment on the centre over the weekend. The company is also preparing to undertake demolition and stabilization work on the facade.
