A group of local residents is raising funds to help with efforts to bring water to an impoverished village in Africa.

Steve and Linda Kovacs are planning their sixth trip to Africa. The couple will be joined by several other local residents to build a well and clean water system at the Good Samaritan Community Nursery and Primary School in the village of Kumuli.

"It's a very dry part of Uganda," said Steve Kovacs, adding the dry season in that part of the country can last up to four months.

The school is home to 350 children who have no source of clean drinking water.

The group is covering all of the travel costs, but must raise funds to help pay for the equipment needed for the project, which will include digging a well as well as installing tanks to capture water during the rainy season.

The group leaves on Oct. 26 and will spend three weeks in Uganda.

To raise funds, Kovacs is raffling off a brass mushroom fountain valued at $2,500. The fountain, which is currently on display at Sharkey's Seafood Bar and Grille in Ladner, comes complete with a large aqua-basin and pump kit.

Raffle tickets cost $10 each and can be purchased at Waterscene, 4946 Chisholm St., or across the street at Sharkey's. The winning ticket will be drawn on Friday, July 5.
