Mayor speaks at chamber AGM

Lois Jackson says announcement coming regarding Delta's industrial lands initiative

Mayor Lois Jackson touched on a number of different topics last Thursday during a speech at the Delta Chamber of Commerce's annual general meeting.

She said Delta's partnership with Ocean Trailer has spearheaded further interest from companies in acquiring and redeveloping other demolition landfill and waste sites along the River Road corridor.

"I'm pleased to report we will be making an announcement soon regarding another exciting development associated with Saving Our Industrial Lands initiative," she told the audience at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn.

Ocean Trailer, a trailer and container business, recently relocated its headquarters to a former private landfill in the Tilbury area in what Jackson called a "landmark deal."

She also noted Delta is in the planning stages for a new fire hall at the Boundary Bay Airport. Delta CAO George Harvie told the Optimist after the meeting that preloading

at the site, which will also serve as a training centre, should start by the end of the year and that the facility could be open by 2017/2018.

Touching on the George Massey Tunnel replacement project, Jackson said Delta is working with provincial Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Todd Stone to ensure the municipality will benefit from the recently announced bridge in terms of transit, cycling and pedestrian movements.

"We are also working hard to get an additional road out of Ladner and I'm especially pressing for the design of an environmental greenway under the new bridge to beautify the area and offer recreational trail opportunities."

Jackson said Delta is nearing its goal of being debt free and that the general debt will be down to $1.5 million by the end of this year.

She also mentioned Delta will be rolling out a new website next month with new online services like parks activity and facilities search tools, an interactive recycling directory and online job application submissions.
