Delta Fire and Emergency Services had a busy Sunday after an alarm at lumber mill in North Delta was called in at about 1 a.m.

A security guard noticed the fire in a stack of finished and wrapped wood product under a covered structure at Acorn Mill at 9355 Alaska Way.

Dept. Chief Dave Ayton said seven trucks and 29 firefighters responded to the blaze. In addition, three trucks from Surrey Fire Department assisted.

“That fire, due to the nature of the building, large industrial building, poses challenges, so it’s very labour intensive,” said Ayton.

Crews were on scene until about 11 p.m., Sunday.

Ayton said it took a long time to put out the blaze. Heavy equipment had to pull apart the pile so that the fire could be put out. Some other equipment also was damaged, but the mill itself was saved.

“Our crews did a phenomenal job. They worked very hard. An industrial building, it’s such a huge building … they worked very hard to mitigate this fire and get it under control. It took a long time to fully extinguish the fire. It was not travelling. It was a great effort made on their part too,” Ayton said.

No one was injured and the mill was not operating at the time.

Delta Police helped to secure the scene and were still there Monday morning as investigators looked over the site.
