Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington said she's disappointed by the news the Liberal government might cancel the fall session of the legislature, however, she said she saw it coming at the end of the spring sitting.
Minister of Finance, and government house leader, Mike de Jong made comments to reporters last Thursday suggesting the coming fall session of the legislature could be cancelled.
"I really wish the premier wasn't going down the same road as [former] premier Campbell with cancelling fall sessions," Huntington said.
The independent MLA said she saw the cancelling of a fall session coming in the last two weeks of the spring session. During that time, she said, the government worked to push through several bills, limiting discussion times to 30 minutes and running several sessions simultaneously.
"It was an insulting assault on democratic rights," she said, adding there was no chance for MLAs to adequately review bills before having to vote.
Huntington said, however, she sees the strategic political reasons for the move.
"They have a new cabinet, so she's protecting her new cabinet ministers," she said, adding new ministers that are not fully up to speed on a new portfolio could be vulnerable to questions from the opposition.
There has also been speculation the premier is attempting to protect the government from too much criticism before next year's election.
The government will have to return for the spring session next year, she said.
