Delta is increasing funding for a popular student scholarship.

At its Oct. 4 meeting, council gave approval to increasing the funding available to students for the Heritage Advisory Commission Scholarship program.

The previous amount available was $1,000. Now students have access to $2,000.

According to a Delta staff report, the HAC Scholarship program was first awarded in 2008 with the objective of encouraging high school students to display an interest in local and regional heritage. Scholarship funds are awarded annually to a graduating secondary student in Delta bases on an evaluation of an original piece of researched work prepared by each student.

In addition to the HAC Scholarship program, Delta also offers scholarship programs to graduating students including: an Agriculture Scholarship program valued at $2,000 and a Trades and Technical Careers Scholarship program with five scholarships available at $2,000 each.

Delta will be working with the Delta School District early next year to provide direction on how graduating students can apply for the scholarships programs and the application deadlines.
