Most comply with civic snow removal policies

Sidewalks must be cleared within 24 hours

Sidewalks are mostly clear but there are still some icy stretches.

Residents and commercial property owners have been getting the message to clear sidewalks of snow and ice during the recent winter storms.

According to the Corporation of Delta's snow removal policies, all snow from sidewalks located adjacent to properties must be cleared within 24 hours to ensure the safety of pedestrians.

"If they do have a sidewalk in front, they do have a responsibility to keep it clear and maintained," said acting director of engineering Hugh Fraser. "To the business property owners we handed out an information reminder letter. In general it has been pretty good. In Ladner, the downtown core looks good. We've only had one or two complaints that I know of."

Residents who have difficulty keeping their sidewalks and driveways clear of snow can take advantage of Delta's Snow Angels program. The program assists seniors and those with physical disabilities who need a helping hand with driveway and sidewalk snow clearing. In Ladner, call the McKee Seniors Recreation Centre at 604-946-1411 for more details.

Other helpful snow tips from Delta include: Do not park your vehicle on the street or in your cul-de-sac. An empty street makes the passage of snow plows and salt spreaders much easier.

Do not attempt to stop the plow truck operators. They follow specifically laid out routes and are under the direction of the engineering department. Direct all requests, comments and concerns to 604-946-3260 during business hours or to Delta police at 604-946-4411 after business hours.

Walk on the left side of the road (facing traffic). On roadways where there are no sidewalks or the sidewalks are impassable due to snow, give the snow plows as much room as possible.

Never shovel snow from sidewalks and driveways onto the street. The snow plows always push the snow to the side of the road. Accordingly, this may result in snow being pushed back onto a driveway rather than having it plowed away. Pushing the snow from a driveway onto the road will add snow and ice to the road, creating a hazardous situation.

Shovel any catch basins if they are in front of a home.
