The Corporation of Delta's employees raised a record breaking $69,182 for the United Way of the Lower Mainland in 2012, an increase of more than $9,000 from the previous year.
"I am continually overwhelmed by the generosity of Delta staff," said Mayor Lois Jackson. "Every year Delta's United Way Committee coordinates a phenomenal workplace campaign, and every year more and more staff donate to this worthy cause."
The United Way Committee set a new direction for the 2012 campaign: Instead of focusing on a dollar amount, the committee focused on a participation goal with the end result being a 50 per cent increase in participation via payroll deductions from the previous year.
Proceeds raised from the campaign will be used to support prevention-based initiatives that address poverty, bullying and seniors' isolation across the Lower Mainland.
"It is because of the generosity of volunteers and donors such as those at the Corporation of Delta that we are able to make a measurable difference in the lives of the most vulnerable in the Lower Mainland," said Jennifer Marshall, a United Way resource development associate.
"We truly couldn't do the work that we do without the amazing support of Delta's employees. We are extremely grateful and want to congratulate the municipality on an incredibly successful campaign."
United Way has recognized the Corporation of Delta's contribution by nominating Delta for the Community Champion Award and the Greatest Spirit Award. Winners of both awards will be announced in March 2013.
This is the seventh consecutive year Delta has exceeded its fundraising goal.
