The new washroom facility at Memorial Park in Ladner is now open to the public.

The City of Delta has announced completion of the facility’s construction, part of an ongoing, multi-year program to replace and upgrade aging park facilities across the city, ensuring consistent architecture, vandalism resistance and accessibility features and amenities that meet community needs.

“Memorial Park is a beloved community space and a vital hub of recreation in Ladner, and I’m glad to see these newly upgraded washrooms open for public use,” said Mayor George Harvie in a news release. “This is another encouraging example of progress on our efforts to upgrade essential facilities across the City of Delta, as we continue to invest in the amenities and services that Deltans rely on. I want to extend my thanks to the workers who made this project a success and to our residents for their patience during construction.”

The new washroom in Memorial Park is similar to the new one recently completed at Ladner Lions Park.

A condition assessment was carried out by a consultant in 2020 for 33 city park washrooms and fieldhouses. That assessment recommended the washroom buildings at Ladner Lions Park and Memorial Park be replaced first as they were at the end of their lifecycles.

A previous report to council on park washrooms noted, “These older facilities do not have the ventilation systems that are required by today’s modern building code. The floors are stained through years of use and emit odours that are embedded in the old concrete flooring. Many of the sites are not accessible for those with mobility limitations.”

Council three years ago approved a contract award of almost $600,000 to replace the washroom facility at Ladner Lions Park. The Memorial Park washroom cost about $790,000 for the demolition of the old structure and new building.
