North Delta Crime Beat: Resident loses $10,000 in crypto currency scam

Files of interest for this week from Delta Police for North Delta.

The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest.

March 18, 700 Block of Eaton Way: Complainant reported the theft of the catalytic converter from their vehicle, left in the parking lot of a business, sometime over the past several days. Police to be provided with any relevant information upon examination of surveillance video.

March 19, 9200 Block of 119A Street: Complainant reported the theft of a package valued at $200 from their doorstep. Surveillance video provides time of delivery and time of theft. The video also reveals a person in black arriving on a black mountain bike. Stills of the suspect to be disseminated for possible identification.

March 20, 7700 Block of 112th Street: During a routine traffic stop, police noticed the odour of liquor emanating from the vehicle. The driver provided two breath samples with both reading fail. The driver was given a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and a 30-day vehicle impoundment. The vehicle was towed from the scene.

March 20, Public Safety Building, 11375 84th Avenue: Complainant reported they made an online purchase of tickets for the Taylor Swift concert but had not received the tickets.  The complainant sent $1,600 via e-transfer but did not receive any phone number, address, or email address for the seller. File concluded at the requested of the complainant.

March 21, Public Safety Building, 11375 84th Avenue: Complainant reported they had sent $500 as a deposit for a basement suite, which they found in an ad on Facebook Marketplace. Further communication through WhatsApp was concluded as the account had been deactivated. The complainant attended the residence that was listed and found it was not as advertised. The complainant contacted the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and advised the bank. 

March 22, 8100 Block of 120th Street: A business reported a theft in progress. Police attended and apprehended two individuals leaving the property with stolen items valued at $80. Both parties were arrested for theft. The business was not interested in charges and the parties were released with a civil ban from the store. 

March 22, 7900 Block of 120th Street: During routine patrol, police stopped a vehicle with a partially obstructed license plate. A strong odour of cannabis was coming from the vehicle and the driver admitted to having smoked cannabis three hours prior. Standard Field Sobriety Test administered, the suspect was issued a 24-hour immediate roadside prohibition and the vehicle was towed. The driver left the area in an Uber. 

March 20, Public Safety Building, 11375 84th Avenue: Complainant reported investing $10,000 in crypto currency through a pop-up advertisement. When they attempted to withdraw profits, the complainant was asked to pay $2,980 in fees to obtain the password for the crypto wallet. The complainant paid the fee but did not receive the password, the complainant then realized the company to be fraudulent.
