North Delta Land Sale
The public is invited to have its say on a land sale proposed by Delta where the proceeds would be used to build a new arts centre.

The municipality is considering selling off land in North Delta and allowing the purchaser to build a multi-building apartment complex there.

It would be part of a plan for Delta to get the money to pay for a new performing arts centre in the community.

Delta has sent out a notice to residents about the rezoning, subdivision and development permit application at 11489 and 11503 84 Ave., where Hari Pal Sharma is proposing to purchase a portion of municipally-owned North Delta Recreation Centre property on 84th Avenue. The idea is to consolidate it with the adjacent property and develop two multi-family residential apartment buildings. The apartments would be comprised of 104 units and range in height from four to six storeys with indoor amenity space.

If the application is approved, Delta would use the funds from the land sale to construct a new arts and culture centre on the North Delta Recreation Centre site.

The proposed apartment complex would be located on a portion of the site containing the existing Firehall Centre for the Arts, which has been identified by Delta as being at the end of its life and in poor condition.

“It should be noted that this application is at a preliminary stage, therefore different aspects of the proposal may change as the application proceeds through the review process before going to Council for their consideration,” the notice states.

Council recently awarded a contract to a firm to come up with a preliminary design for the new arts centre. The vision for a new facility includes a community theatre with approximately 120 seats, areas for music lessons and art shows, multi-purpose rooms and social gathering space.

A public information meeting on the land sale and development proposal will take place at the North Delta Recreation Centre on Wednesday, July 20, from 7 to 9 p.m.
