One windy weekend

Peak of 1,400 Delta households go without power, storm causes regionwide outages

More than half a million homes and businesses in the region were without power throughout the weekend and into Monday, however the power remained on for many in Delta.

BC Hydro spokesperson Simi Heer said Monday that at the peak of the outage on Saturday there were 1,200 households in Delta without power. Sunday and Monday saw slightly higher numbers with peaks of 1,400 in the dark each day.

At around 5 p.m. Monday that number was down to 1,200 and Heer said crews were working to have all power restored in Delta before midnight.

Widespread power outages were seen across the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley after a wind storm blew through the region on Saturday leaving more than 500,000 homes and businesses in the dark.

BC Hydro brought in crews from around the province to help restore electricity with work going on throughout the weekend and into Monday as another, milder, storm rolled in causing more outages.

On Saturday, wind gusts of up to 90 kilometres per hour downed trees and power lines throughout the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley.

It was BC Hydro's biggest disruption since 2006, which saw windstorms down thousands of trees in Stanley Park. More than 400 Hydro workers, including 250 power line technicians were on the job on Sunday.

On Saturday, Delta had two arborists, a tree contractor and 10 staff out at 43 different locations and 13 parks around the community, said Steven Lan, director of engineering. On Monday, 15 municipal workers were out taking care of road clean up while an additional 22 staff did further tree inspections and clean up in Delta parks. Lan said clean up would continue over the next few weeks.
