Owner eventually reunited with bicycle

Police attend Craigslist meetup, both parties presented as being honest and no charges are laid

The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. The following are some of the calls the Delta Police responded to in the previous week:

Tsawwassen

Aug. 17, 3:25 a.m., 56th Street & Hwy 17: Police observed a vehicle speeding and accelerating in a 60 km/hr zone and then through the red light at the intersection. Police pulled the vehicle over and the driver produced a valid driver's license. The driver indicated he was driving in this manner as it was the early hours of the morning and few vehicles were on the road. The vehicle was impounded and the driver given tickets for driving at an excessive speed and failing to stop at a red light.

Aug. 17, 9:57 a.m., 1 Ferry Causeway: Complainant reported he was driving a rental vehicle when he was rear ended as he stopped for a yellow light at the first set of lights on exiting the ferry terminal. The offending driver was inattentive and failed to stop in time and as a result he was issued tickets for driving without reasonable consideration and failing to produce a valid driver's license.

Aug. 18, 10:25 a.m., 1200-block Beach Grove Road: Complainant reported she was parked by the side of the road while she put her child in her car seat when another vehicle drove by and hit the open door. The vehicle which is described as a grey station wagon then sped from the scene. Two witnesses to the accident were able to provide police with statements. The victim's vehicle was towed from the scene as the door would not close.

Aug. 20, 10:39 a.m., Vardon Place & Farrell Avenue: Complainant advised police that he had reported his bicycle stolen to the Point Roberts Sheriff. Subsequently he found the bicycle for sale on Craigslist and called the seller with a plan to meet. Police attended and confirmed the ad matched the bike and then met with the seller. The seller who was a homestay student claimed he had found the bike on a trail in Point Roberts. The guardian of the homestay confirmed the story. Both parties presented as being honest. The owner was reunited with his bicycle and no charges were laid.

Ladner

Aug. 17, 11:42 a.m., 4700-block 45th Avenue: Complainant reported that two duffel bags were left on the sidewalk in front of his residence. All neighbours had been contacted but no owner was located. Police attended and searched the bags, which were neatly packed with clothing. It was determined the bags likely fell from someone's vehicle. The bags were retrieved by Delta Works.

Aug. 17, 1:14 p.m., 4900-block 44th Avenue: Complainant reported she had left her home locked and when she returned in three hours discovered someone had broken into the home and stolen several items including a computer, gamins systems, jewellery and cash. The forensic identification team attended and processed the scene.

Aug. 17, 6:10 p.m., 57th Street & Ladner Trunk Road: A vehicle ran the red light and T-boned a vehicle that was turning left, causing approximately $7,500 damage. Two of the passengers in the victim vehicle suffered minor injuries and were transported to hospital. Both vehicles were towed from the scene and the offending driver given a ticket for failure to stop for a red light.

Aug. 18, 7:07 a.m., Chisholm Street & Georgia Street: Complainant observed two males in a parked commercial van dumping garbage on the sidewalk. Police contacted the owner of the van who suspected one of his employees was responsible. The owner personally attended the scene and cleaned up the garbage.

Aug. 19, 8:15 a.m., 5100-block Ladner Trunk Road: Two citizens reported the license number of a vehicle where a male was observed loading bottles of water into his vehicle from the store the previous night. A police database check revealed the name of the owner of the vehicle. Police spoke to the management of the business, the owner did not want to proceed with charges.
