The province required municipalities to establish separate designated reserve funds for the transparent use of the Growing Communities funding

A pair of Delta sports field projects are first on the list for funding the city is receiving from the provincial government.

Council on Monday (April 24) agreed to establish a new reserve fund, called the Growing Communities Reserve Fund, where a one-time grant of just over $16 million to Delta will go before its directed to local infrastructure projects.

The city will first use that funding for a second artificial turf field at Mackie Park and a new track at Delta Secondary, said Coun. Dylan Kruger, who was acting mayor for the meeting.

The province last month provided $1 billion in grants to all 188 B.C. municipalities and regional districts for investments in community infrastructure and amenities.

The funding provided through the fund should be limited to one-off costs needed to build required infrastructure and amenities rather than funding ongoing or operational activities, a staff report notes. The funds are to be incremental to currently planned investments and should accelerate the delivery of capital projects.

Funded projects must acknowledge the province’s contribution through temporary and permanent on-site signage.
