The Astoria and Mayfair Retirement Residences hosted a carnival in Port Coquitlam to raise finds for the Ukrainian Humanitarian Appeal.

A Tri-Cities retirement community has proven once again that generosity can keep you young at heart.

Residents of the Astoria and Mayfair Retirement Residences (2245 Kelly Ave.), as well as the general public, were entertained during the facility's Donald Trail Carnival earlier this month, which was cancelled the last two years resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The July 13 event acted as fundraiser and brought in $1,500 for the Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal.

This adds to a known year-to-date total of more than $2,000, combining other fundraisers Astoria has hosted in-house for the Red Cross' initiative.

In a release sent to the Tri-City News, most of the proceeds were from dunk-tank ticket sales of tickets, which gave visitors the opportunity to drop others into a pool of water, including Astoria general manager Naheed Walji.

The rest of the money came from throwing pies into people's faces, food, drinks and the 50/50 draw.

The Ukraine crisis appeal is organized by the Canada-Ukraine Foundation (CUF) and the Ukrainian Canadian Congress.

It works with Ukrainian government ministries and ensures donations that come in meet the immediate needs of displaced citizens.
