Eating healthy foods every day is one of the best things you can do for yourself and your family.

Healthy eating provides individuals with the nutrients and energy needed for growth and development as well as the foundation for lifelong good health.

Food Skill for Families, a five-session healthy cooking program and a tour to the grocery store, aims to teach and encourage healthy eating in a fun and relaxed environment.

The initiative, co-ordinated by the Canadian Diabetes Association, will be offered to families living in Delta by Reach Child & Youth Development Society beginning next weekend.

"There are many families that can benefit from this program and the knowledge and skills gained can be applied to improve the health of children and families," said Sherrie Jamieson, manager at Reach.

During the three-hour sessions, participants will learn how to get in the habit of eating well by learning strategies such as reducing sodium intake in their food, enjoying good fats, fibering up, looking for hidden sugars, food safety, food storage and cooking smart with a smaller budget.

"Helping your children develop healthy eating habits can be a challenge and the goal of this program is to provide easy to understand tips, techniques and cooking skills for parents that are finding it difficult to make healthy eating the low cost and the easy choice for their families," said Sepia Sharma, community facilitator for the program.

Information on local programs will also be shared to help reduce the barriers families face when making healthy choices. In addition, Sharma emphasized the importance of purchasing local, unprocessed food and preparing meals at home to stay healthier.

The program starts on Saturday, April 13 and will be held on five consecutive Saturdays from 10: 30 a.m. to 1: 30 p.m. Space is limited.
