Delta’s parks, recreation and culture commission is looking at starting a new public art project outside the former museum building in Ladner Village.

The project includes 3-D chalk art on the street, a community chalkboard and a framed print of the street art at the century-old Delta Street building, which housed the Delta Museum for half of century and is now home to the Ladner Community Police Station.

Last fall, the Artists in the Village Society donated $7,000 to the city to go toward a public art application. The funds were raised from the 2016 Artists in the Village community art event. The society has since disbanded, but civic staff met with the representatives to discuss potential public art, coming up with the concept of a 3-D chalk image along with additional art applications.

Still to be presented to Delta council, the idea includes having a 3-D chalk image on the ground, which wouldn’t be permanent, and a photo of it taken and a framed copy placed within the building. The 3-D image has to be viewed from a certain angle to look three dimensional.

A report to the commission notes the inclusion of a community chalkboard will provide additional opportunities for community engagement. The chalkboard is proposed to be a permanent fixture, affixed to the wrought iron bars underneath and to the right of the front stairs.

It’s suggested the public art project be scheduled during existing community events such as the 2019 Tour de Delta.
