Residents sound alarm over speeding vehicles

Through traffic plagues quiet Ladner neighbourhood

Residents in the vicinity of 52nd Avenue and Crescent Drive are raising traffic safety concerns.

Residents living along what should be a quiet residential street in Ladner have some serious concerns about traffic safety.

"I constantly see people flying down the street," said Kellie Wray, who lives on 52nd Avenue in a home with her mom, partner and their infant son.

"This is crazy out here on this street," said Eileen Wray, who has lived in the area since 2004. "I guarantee you, they come down this street going at least 50 miles per hour (80 kilometres per hour)."

Wray said she is concerned because there are a number of families with children living on the street, which is near an elementary school, park and dance school.

"People shouldn't be speeding like that around these neighbourhoods," Eileen Wray said.

The women are also concerned about the configuration of the intersection at 52nd Avenue and Crescent Drive, which they say has been the site countless near misses.

They say many drivers approaching from Crescent Drive treat the stop sign more like a yield or, due to the configuration of the intersection, don't see oncoming cars.

Neighbour Wilma Haig said traffic volumes in the area will only increase as Marina Gardens continues to build out.

She said it appears that Central Avenue and 52nd Avenue have become a short cut for drivers looking to avoid the traffic signals along Ladner Trunk Road or the speed bumps along Grove Avenue.

The women said they would like to see the municipality install some form of traffic calming measures in the area.

Steven Lan, Delta's director of engineering, said the municipality is looking into the residents' concerns.

He said according to data from ICBC, between 1996 and 2013 there were seven crashes at the intersection of Crescent Drive and 52nd Avenue.

Lan said the municipality looked at speeds along 52nd Avenue in 2013 and found that most drivers were going between 42 km/h and 51 km/h. He said given the concerns raised by the residents, Delta would measure speeds in the area again.

"We're going to take a look at that," he said, adding he doesn't see any issues with the sightlines at the intersection of 52nd Avenue and Crescent Drive.
