Rotarians ready to pick fruit

Project to help feed needy families

Do you have unwanted fruit growing in your yard? The Tsawwassen Rotary Club wants it.

The local service club has started a neighbourhood fruit gleaning project with the aim of helping to feed local families in need.

Tsawwassen Rotary is working with the Earthwise Society and the Delta Food Coalition to get fruit and vegetables that would normally go to waste to families and individuals in need.

The club is looking to harvest unwanted fruit that is untreated and close to ripeness. It is specifically looking for the following types of fruit: apples, plums, pears, Asian pears, cherries, peaches, grapes and blueberries.

Rotary volunteers provide all the needed equipment and labour, so property owners just have to provide access to the trees.

The removal of unwanted fruit also leads to a tidier yard.

Tsawwassen Rotarian Peter Edwards said the club will work with homeowners to schedule a convenient time for the harvesting.

Edwards said the club has done the same thing with local farms and greenhouses to glean potatoes and tomatoes, however this is the first time it's appealing to the larger community.

Anyone with untreated trees with fruit close to ripeness that would like to contribute to the program is asked to call 604-940-9201 or email [email protected].
