Margaret Davies created the Tsawwassen Sun Festival's Sunny Sammy logo in 1972 and says she's amazed the character is still used today.

"He's still out there. It's amazing," says Davies.

She had the idea it should "be a little fun character" that represented the Sun Festival as well as paid homage to the Tsawwassen First Nation.

Davies left Tsawwassen for Vancouver in 1992 but moved back in April.

"It's a wonderful feeling to be back here," she says, adding she plans to attend the Sun Festival this weekend and is looking forward to seeing the parade.

Davies was active in the community, sitting on committees and getting involved in events like the Delta Summer Games, Delta Expo '86 committee as well as spending time with the Delta Chamber of Commerce and Tsawwassen Business Association.

She also owned local publications such as This Month in Delta and the Sunshiner, a weekly newspaper.

Davies was seriously injured in a 2004 car crash and now uses a scooter.

Davies' daughter Shannon says people recognize her mom around town.

"They immediately begin to chat about one memory or another. It is lovely to watch, as a simple trip to White Spot turns into hours of laughter and memories," she says in an e-mail to the Optimist.

Davies says she plans to start working on a book about the pioneers of Delta.

"That's my ultimate dream now. I'm back here and now I'm going to do it."
