The volunteers of the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Station 8 Delta were conducting training manoeuvres just west of Point Roberts on Monday afternoon when a May Day call came in on their VHF.

Volunteers were dispatched immediately to Cabbage Island, just off Saturna Island in the southern Gulf Islands region, and reached a large pleasure boat at anchor within 15 minutes.

The crew found a 67-year-old man lying on the back deck of the vessel. He had fallen off the top deck of the boat and collided with the boat's railing before hitting the water.

The man had suffered multiple bruises and some broken bones.

With the assistance of Canadian Coast Guard Ganges base, the patient was transferred to a spine board and then transported to a waiting ambulance crew near Sidney on Vancouver Island.
